April Newsletter

"O, how this spring of love resembleth
The uncertain glory of an April day,
Which now shows all the beauty of the sun, And by and by a cloud takes all away!"

Shakespeare here sums up the month of April and so far this year we've had some icy blasts of winter to keep us on our toes.

Hopefully the warmer weather is not far behind.  So this month we thought we'd bring you some inspiration to get you ready for those warm springtime evenings that we'll be enjoying as the month progresses...

Spring Box
For just £55 you will receive six mixed wines perfect for the new season:

Funkstille Gruner Veltliner 12.5% ABV: A perfect match for vegan salads: “Subtle exotic hints, ripe pear and fresh citrus flavours, it's a dry wine with complex flavours. The palate is rich with flavours of melon and grapefruit with a refreshing, zippy finish.”

Villaricca Chardonnay 13.5% ABV: Perfect to enjoy alongside roasted veg, creamy pastas and risottos: “Strong tropical fruit aromas with pineapple, mango and banana aromas emphasised. In the mouth it is voluminous, fresh and full of fruit. Highlighted by great persistence and an excellent balance.”

Bella Modella Pinot Grigio Blush 12% ABV: Fantastic as an aperitif, or with salads or risotto: “This delicate rosé has deliciously strawberry laced aromas followed by a seductive palate of crisp, juicy, creamy fruit. Ideal sipped chilled on a summer’s day or coupled with lightly spicy foods.”

Chateau De Roulerie Rose D'Anjou  11% ABV: Can of course be enjoyed on its own, with light meals or with tomato based pasta dishes: “The bouquet is of raspberries and strawberries, really delicious off dry style with a hint of liquorice and toffee.”

Paparuda Pinot Noir 12.5% ABV: This pairs very nicely with vegan roasts and stews: “Fruity, rich and potent, with layers of ripe black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon. Deep, with pretty fruitcake and spicy aromatics. Lingering aftertaste.”

Rioja D'Alto 13.5% ABV: This delicious wine is versatile but works very well with tapas: “With hints of spice and red fruits on the nose, de Alto is beautifully balanced and offers layers of red berry fruits on the palate, laced with vanilla and hints of mocha and liquorice.”

Rosé wines for your delight...

Solara, Rosé, Viile Timisului Romania, 2019

A beautiful bottle that we think is worth £8.99 just for that summer vibe label!  Fortunately, the wine inside lives up to the label..."Strawberry and red fruits, crisp fresh and fruity , with notes of raspberry on the palate."  A great choice to accompany your vegan pasta dishes.

Ancora Monferrato Chiaretto, 2019

At just £8.99 a bottle this is a really good option - a wine which was commended in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2016.

Serve this wine chilled with roasted vegetables and tomato-based pasta dishes:  "Aromas of fresh strawberry and redcurrants. The ripe and juicy plum and cherry characters on the palate give excellent substance and weight, all balanced by crisp acidity."

Domaine Sainte Marie, Tradition, Cotes De Provence, Rosé, Provence, France, 2019
At £16.50 a bottle this is one of the higher priced rosés we offer, but we think it is worth it.  Quality in abundance.

This rosé is gorgeous to enjoy on its own, and can be paired with practically any vegan food: "This pink and exquisite wine starts with various fragrances of peach, grape, apricot, boxwood and a bud of blackcurrant. A mix of sensations which declines with even stronger sensations in the mouth."

New wine alert!

Three new wines: Vermador Blanco, Rosé & Tinto

Bodegas Pinoso was set up as a cooperative in 1932 and the work carried out in the vineyards faithfully respects the wining traditions of their wine producers.

The coming together and effort put in by the founding members of Bodegas Pinoso meant that the winery quickly became renowned for the quality of its wines. This is why, in the years that followed, many other wine producers wanted to join the cooperative and initially in 1969 and later on in 1974, the winery was extended so as to make room for the new producers. After quite a lot more expansion at the beginning of the 80’s, the winery was capable of producing up to approximately 19,000.000 litres. It thus became the most important winery cooperative in the province of Alicante with 650 members. At the end of the 90’s the winery began to rethink its quality policy so as to improve its bottled wines while at the same time designating the first areas of the winery land to be used for certified ecological vineyard plots.

Each of the three Vermador wines we offer is very reasonably priced at just £10.75.

The Blanco has won several awards, and is perfect on its own or pairs well with salads:  "Clean and transparent with yellow pale tones and hints of green. Floral notes, with recollections of green, white and citric fruits like apple, pear, banana. Round with balanced acidity which scours the mouth leaving it refreshed with fruity and clean finish".

The Rosé goes really well with cous cous, pasta dishes and patas bravas:  "Very brilliant pink with fruity aromas recalling strawberries and plums. Full fruity flavour, fresh, with a long retro-nasal persistence. The wine is sober and elegant as well as fresh and vivacious."

The Tinto is a good friend to tapas food, aubergine and lentil dishes: "Very brilliant crimson red with a purple border boasting the youthfulness of the wine. Rich aromas of red forest fruits and hints of spices. Well structured, powerful and balanced. Notes of black fruits seducing the palate. A wine which shows off its Mediterranean heritage."

Prosecco with your pals!

Mabis, Biscardo Prosecco Spumante Millesimato, DOC, Veneto, Italy (150CL)

As lockdown gradually eases, we'll be thinking about fabulous opportunities to get together with our friends and family again.  We have just the thing to celebrate these precious moments.  A magnum of vegan Prosecco!

This bottle comes from the Biscardo family who have been making wine from their base in Soave for over 150 years and are currently led by brothers Maurizio and Martino.

During the course of Maurizio's long and illustrious career, he has consulted for well known wineries around Italy and in doing so he came across the vineyards for their Puglian wines. Both the Pugliese and Veneto wines are characterised by an almost dangerous drinkability, aromatic purity and exceptional value for money.

Vines are planted at 3,500 to 4,000 rootstocks per hectare and the crop growing technique is typical for this area (with simple or double espalier). Only traditional pruning is used and the annual yield is about 100 tons of grapes.

Harvest is handmade and, in order to avoid any skin or acetic fermentation, the grapes are immediately carried to the vinification cellar during the first hours of the day. De-stalking and soft pressing at controlled temperature are the next two steps, where the must is kept in small stainless steel tanks until fermentation is completed. Fermentation is partially interrupted trough the cold-process, and the wine obtained is then transferred into small stainless steel tanks under nitrogen. Around 4 months after vinification, re-fermentation occurs in autoclave.

This results in an elegant, delicate and aromatic Prosecco with hints of apples and honeysuckle.  It is very easy to enjoy!
