December Newsletter

I am really looking forward to our two tastings on the 8 and 9 December – a mixture of old favourites and new wines to try. In the new year we will be hopefully doing some extra tastings based on Mother’s Day and Easter – so keep an eye on the events page on the website for details. Drop me an email of any other ‘themed’ tastings you think may work well susan@vegantipples.co.uk. All through December we are doing free delivery in Edinburgh – so get your orders in now. Take a look at our gin page for some great gifts from Pickerings. We have a Crimbo Calendar – six small gins for every night from Boxing Day through to Hogmanay and we have the Sloe gin back in stock for these cold nights. And don’t forget Vegan Tipples our Christmas mixed cases all contain tasting notes, so you can hold your own tasting event at home. I have been through the difficult task of selecting the wines I will be drinking on Christmas day, so carry on reading for my choices. I am so delighted with some of the new wines we have taken on this year and the vintages have been great. We had some good news in that the duty on alcohol is frozen until next year – the prices increases we have had to implement this year have been relentless and I am hoping there will be nothing too bad in the annual increases in April. It has been a tough year in the wine industry, but the important thing is that most of our producers have survived it – including the smaller ones. So a very Merry Christmas to you all. Thank you for all your custom and support this year, as a small business it really does mean the world to me. . Have a great festive season and...”Happy drinking.”

Christmas time is gin time...

The best-selling Pickering's Gin Baubles are back featuring six different Christmassy creations! These sell out each year, and no surprise as they’re a great value gift at just £28. Each gin is distilled in Pickering's copper pot still Gertrude, hand-crafted using their award-winning gin as a base. The flavours include Christmas Clementine, Festive Cranberry, Spiced Pear and Cinnamon, Figgy Pudding, Plum and Ginger and, wait for it...Brussels Sproud (we know it sounds boners but trust us, you won’t be disappointed!

“T'was the week after Christmas and all through the land, People forgot what day was at hand. Was it Monday or Thursday about to begin? "Who cares" they said "Let's have a gin!" The lull between festivities will soon pass us by, as we countdown to New Year and end on a high.” Six bottles of small batch gin. Hand distilled, labelled and capped in Pickering’s one of a kind distillery in the centre of Edinburgh £30

We have added lots of new wines to our Vegan Tipples catalogue recently.

Please take a look at our website www.vegantipples.co.uk to check out the full range. We’d love to take this opportunity to introduce you to two new wines from Jordan. Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on a farm with a history going back over 300 years. Gary’s parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the 146 hectare Stellenbosch property in 1982, and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specialising in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. From the Jordan hillside vineyards one has spectacular panoramic views of Table Mountain, False Bay and Stellenbosch. Their focus is on producing fiercely individual wines that combine the fruity accessibility of the New World with the classic elegance of the old.

Jordan 'Long Fuse' Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

A serious wine that is approachable now, but will mature further with age. Best with rich foods, perfect for the winter months: “Huge mouth-filling flavours of blackberry, cassis and vanilla. French oak barrels add a complex toastiness. Alluring in its youth but will reward those who resist temptation and explore the wine’s maturation potential.”£19.99

Jordan Barrel Chardonnay 2021

This buttery textured wine would pair well with rich and creamy dishes: “A powerful expression of Chardonnay, brimming with fruit flavour and elegance. Bold and graceful with fragrances of lemon biscuit and overripe oranges. A buttery toastiness from the oak rounds off the complex hazelnut and citrus flavours.” £19.99

This year we believe we’ve excelled ourselves with the fantastic festive offer! We have three options for you to
choose from:
For just £65 you can order 2 x bottles of fizz, 2 bottles of white and 2 bottles of red.
For £85 we can provide a fantastic Christmas Box which includes 2 white wines, 2 red wines and a bottle of fizz as well as a bottle of dessert wine. For £88 you can choose our great value option for 2 bottles of red wine, 2 bottles of white wine, a bottle of fizz and a bottle of white port. Each of these Christmas Boxes represents really great value for money. You can rest assured that each Box has been lovingly curated by Vegan Tipples Founder and Director, Sue

It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it... Sue has gallantly spent the month of November trying out and testing a wide range of delicious wines. All in the name of bringing to you, dear Vegan Tipples customers, her very best recommendations for the Christmas table! The wines she has selected this year to drink on 25 December. Sue knows a thing or two about wine, so if it’s good enough for her... First up we have Domaine Michaut Freres, Chablis, Burgundy, France, 2021.  A wine best enjoyed with vegan cheese, vegan terrine and creamy dishes : “A mineral driven Chablis with fresh floral notes and a hint of iodine.” £22.95  Then we have Malbec, Felino,Viña Cobos, 2021.This is a beautiful accompaniment to any meal, but particularly well with hearty casseroles or a vegan roast: “A deep red color with inky black tones. Aromas of blackberries, cherries and red fruit. On the palate the wine is medium bodied, with juicy tannins, pure and very generous.” £15.99 Then we have Indomita, Nostros Late Harvest,  Casablanca, Chile, 2022 This wine works beautifully chilled as an aperitif, or served with vegan cheese or fruit-based desserts: “A beautifully golden colour, reminiscent of honey characterises this delicately sweet wine. Aromas of white peach, white tea leaves and lychee fill the nose, whilst the palate is clean, bright with a candied lemon peel acidity giving elegance.” £8.99

International Cabernet Franc Day - 4 December
We love any excuse to celebrate wines here at Vegan Tipples, so let’s raise a glass to the International Cabernet Franc Day as we head into advent, on 4 December! We heartily recommend this rather special wine, Cabernet Franc, Raats Family Wines, 2020 Bruwer Raats is a gentle giant of a man and his reputation is starting to match his stature. His mastery of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc is bringing him praise from around the world as "the most exciting and foward thinking winemaker" in Stellenbosch.  This is an utterly elegant wine best paired with rich dishes, perfect to enjoy in the winter months: “Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2022 - Gloriously perfumed and intense, this textbook Cabernet Franc is a delightful expression of the Polkadraai Hills. Smartly wooded in 25% new wood, with 35% whole bunches adding another layer of complexity.”
