July Newsletter

We kicked off June with a great event at the Assembly Rooms on George Street. There were many wine makers there displaying their wares and I'd like to thank all our lovely customers who came to say hello! Oz Clarke very kindly tried all our wines, more on that later... In one of Oz Clarke's masterclasses he gave a big shout out to our Funkstille Gruner Veltliner as one of the ones that had to be tasted at the event! Of course we always knew it was a fantastic wine, but it was pleasing to hear such a wine expert agree. This special wine is included in our Summer Box.
It was interesting to hear feedback from many people at the event that they didn't want to try our wine, because it  is vegan! Some assumed that it would mean  the wines may not contain alcohol or that they would be sub-standard. Obviously our wines are selected because they are vegan, but also because they are exceptionally good quality, low intervention wines. So we'll be branching out with some on non-vegan sites to try to get that message across, as we want everyone to enjoy what we have to offer. If we can help non vegans to agree that vegan doesn't equal poor quality then that can only be a step in the right direction!
Sadly VAT on alcohol in August is changing, more bad news for the industry! There is an increase in duty of 44p for most still wines and a reduction of 19p for most sparkling wines. There are also calls for the minimum pricing in Scotland to be increased again. We are waiting to see what our suppliers are doing, as we had a big hike in costs at the start of the year. As always we'll attempt to keep any increases to a minimum!
On a lighter note, long summer evenings of sipping gorgeous wine ahead...."Happy drinking"!

Great wines liberated from alcohol...

More and more people, for various reasons, are enjoying low alcohol or alcohol-free drinks now, and the great news is that the low or no-alcohol wines and beers on offer now are better than ever before! For this reason we're delighted to now be offering some fabulous new items within this range. Check out our website for the
full catalogue. Here we present a couple of our current favourites in this range:
DR. LO Riesling alcohol-free
Just because you are drinking something Alcohol-Free doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice taste or quality. That is
basically what DR. LO Riesling is about, to show that an Alcohol-Free wine can also be amazing and versatile and uncompromising in quality. "DR. LO Riesling has just the right amount of fruitiness to balance the crisp acidity. On the palate it is clearly Riesling, but it walks the line between a fruity and drier style. The characteristic acidity Mosel Riesling helps it finish fresh and clean."
£9.99 a bottle.
For something with a sparkle, how about Oddbird No Alcohol Spumante, Veneto? "Using grapes from them Italian province of Treviso located in Veneto, commonly known as the Prosecco region, Oddbird Spumante is made with traditional methods and 100% Glera grapes exclusively from DOC and DOCG vineyards. The wine is matured for up to 12 months and then gently liberated from alcohol to preserve its natural character. With notes of nashi pear, elderflower, green apple and grapefruit."

As we mentioned above, we were delighted to know that Oz Clarke was impressed with our Vegan Tipples offering at the recent Edinburgh Uncorked
event! Here we present to you two of his favourite wines:
Thistledown, Gorgeous Grenache, South Australia, 2021
Ever since historic Scots, James Busby and John MacArthur founded the Australian wine industry in the early 19th century, the relationship between Scotland and Australia has been an enduring one. Guardians of a long history, Thistledown Wine Co. continues the tradition of Scottish ingenuity and great Australian wine. From their small-batch winery in the idyllic Adelaide Hills, they work with pristine fruit sourced from iconic vineyard sites. "Aromatic and lifted on the nose with a beautifully layered, textural palate with wild strawberry and spice, succulent, juicy and Pinot-like in its profile while the finish is savoury and moreish.."
£13.99 a bottle

Funkstille Gruner Veltliner, Niederosterreich, Austria,2022

We all need a little 'Funkstille' (radio silence) in our life now and again! This pairs well with grilled dishes and summer salads: "Subtle exotic hints, ripe pear and fresh citrus flavours, it's a dry wine with complex flavours. The palate is rich with flavours of melon and grapefruit with a refreshing, zippy finish."

£10.99 a bottle

It's Wimbledon once again!
What better way to bring the atmosphere of centre court into your own living room than adding some sumptuous = strawberries and vegan cream and a fabulous fizz into the mix? The first week of July is also Sparkling Wine Week so why not purchase a bottle of our Pradio, Passaparola Prosecco, Spumante DOC to really enjoy the tennis season?
The fruit concentration is balanced with crisp, refreshing acidity. "This classic from the North of Italy is a
delicious sparkler with aromatic pear flavours on the nose followed by a crisp palate of succulent apple and pear. Gently foamy, with a crisp and delicate finish, drink on its own or in true venetian style, as a Bellini."
Just £13.99 a bottle

Barbecue season...

It's definitely that time of the year once again, where we can enjoy cooking our vegan food al fresco.
We have some great wine recommendations for accompanying the barbecue...

Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rose, 2021

This is a wine perfect for holidays and days filled with sunshine: "It is light and refreshing, with deliciously bright berry and red fruit flavours and a clean, zippy finish."
£12.25 a bottle.

The Great Escape Chardonnay, Eden Valley Thistledown, 2021 This is another fine choice when you're lighting the bbq: "A fabulous wine offering white peach, nougat, and a little spicy oak. It’s fresh,"

£15.99 a bottle.
