Spotlight on Austrian wines
Funkstille Zweigelt, Niederosterreich, Austria, 2023
Now more than ever we need a little ‘Funkstille’ or radio silence in our lives, so it was only natural that as interest and desire for Austrian wines grew, so would the Funkstille range.
It all started with Grüner, then Zweigelt and now Funkstille is a quintet including Riesling, a Skin Contact wine and now Blaufränkisch … capturing Austria’s most famous varieties and archetypal styles under some eye-popping packaging. They've worked with a 16th generation producer in Niederösterreich to put together this characterful range. All work in the vineyard is carried out sustainably, with the use of their own fertilisers made from grape skins, manure and straw from their fields, to improve the soil structure and vitality of their vines. The south-east and south-west exposure of the slopes provides conditions for perfect ripening. Grapes are harvested in the early morning to harness acidity and pure fruit expression, and taken to their energy neutral winery for vinification.
The dark berried Zweigelt grapes come from selected south facing vineyards, perfectly exposed to the sun, produce a bright, ripe and abundant red wine. Great care and attention is taken with canopy management in order to balance the leaf density of the vines and ensure good air-flow and healthy grapes. Harvest takes place in mid-October.
This juicy wine works well with roasted dishes and a good old fashioned nut roast - as well as around the barbecue: "Bursting with vibrant red cherry, juicy plum, and lively berry flavours, this irresistibly joyful red is all about pure, unfiltered pleasure. Medium-bodied with silky, ripe tannins and a subtle hint of spice on the finish, it's a fresh, fruit-forward wine that's perfect for any occasion. Bright, juicy, and effortlessly drinkable—your new go-to red." £12.25
Stift Klosterneuburg Klostersekt
The history of Klosterneuburg Monastery and its wine estate begins in 1114, it is therefore the oldest wine estate in Austria. The winery cultivates 108 hectares of vineyards and counts to the biggest and renowned wine estates of Austria.
The vineyards are situated in selected top locations in Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf. Since the year 2009 it is the first carbon neutral wine estate in Europe.
The classic Klostersekt is a blend of 60% Grüner Veltliner and 40% Welschriesling (Italian Riesling). The ripe grapes are harvested earlier to ensure an aromatic and fresh taste. With it‘s elegant mousseux the Klostersekt can be enjoyed as an Aperitif or accompanies starters or desserts excellently.
"This sparkling classic is characterized by a clear, fresh and fruity aromas of apples and lime on the nose. Due to a yeast contact of at least 9 months the Klostersekt displays an harmonious aroma expression on the palate." £16.99
El Picoteo Rosé Organic 2023
Summer is the season for savouring a delightful bottle of chilled rosé! We have a super new bottle of organic rosé for you, just in time for summer!
For this stunning wine, Syrah grapes are selected from organically grown and certified vines with a high leaf to fruit ratio to preserve the high acidity and freshness of the grapes. Grapes are carefully chosen and harvested at night in the last week of August, macerated with the skins for 12 hours to extract colour and aromas, then fermented at low temperature for 20 days. The freshness, ripe red fruit aromas and softness of this dry rosé wine make it perfect to serve with rice and pasta dishes, spicy food, a fresh summer salad as well as vegan cheese. It work equally well enjoyed with food or simply on its own! " A smooth and harmonious wine, with the intense colour typical of rosé wines from the D.O. Almansa region, and a perfect balance between the body of the wine and its natural acidity." £12.49
Nooh Still Rose N/V
Named Nooh, a combination of "No" for those who don't want alcohol and the chemical symbol for the alcohol molecule "OH".
Château La Coste sits within a landscape steeped in the rich history of its Provençal setting. The original bastide was established in 1682 but it has existed as a domaine since the Roman times, with an agricultural and winemaking tradition marked by the land, evident in the presence of dry stone walls, bridges and wells. The grapes were taken from a number of vineyards with varying soil types all sourced from growers that have long-standing partnerships with the winery. The most prominent soils are deep clay-limestone.
Using La Coste’s Rosé d’Une Nuit organic cuvée as the base wine, alcohol was then extracted via vacuum distillation. Evaporation occurred at a maximum of 35-40°C, so as not to negatively a/ect the wine and to preserve aromas. The sparkling wine was then made sparkling using the carbonation method and both wines were completed with the addition of 3.5gAl residual sugar to enhance mouthfeel.
This gorgeous wine pairs well with Moroccan spiced dishes and salads: "A brightly aromatic nose, combining watermelon, citrus and rose floral characters with a hint of jasmine. The taste brings forward more melon and strawberry flavours with a zingy tang of grapefruit on the finish." £19.99

Bodegas Sumarroca, Cava Brut Reserva Organic, DO Cava, Spain, 2021
This Cava is great with barbecued and grilled foods, stews, fried foods as well as desserts that are not too sweet such as fruit salads, cakes and creme brulee!
"All those who adore Champagne´s classic fresh brown bread-scented yeasty flavours will love this classy Cava; rich, full complex and toasty. Pale yellow colour. Fresh aroma and fruity and fresh on the palate with fine, pleasant bubbles that perfectly complement the wine's structure." £13.25
Choosing just one Shiraz to recommend was tough, but we selected:
Bobbie Burns Shiraz 2021
This is one to enjoy with Moroccan spices: "Dark plums and blackberry perfectly integrated with the more elegant characters of black pepper and aniseed, a hint of spicy oak sitting in the background. This wine is full bodied with mouth filling plum and mulberry fruit yet the palate is beautifully structured with layers of fine tannin and complementary characters of liquorice and cocoa." £20.99
